Spaghetti and Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, eggs, garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 1 1/2-inch meatballs and set aside on a baking sheet.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add meatballs in batches and cook, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  6. Return meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let simmer on low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. While the meatballs are simmering, cook spaghetti according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  8. Serve meatballs and sauce over cooked spaghetti, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
