These juicy burgers are perfect for a summer weekend cookout. The homemade buns add an extra touch to make this meal truly special.

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef, preferably 80% lean
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 homemade burger buns

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Gently mix to combine without overworking the meat.
  2. Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. Preheat a grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. Brush the patties with olive oil on both sides.
  4. Place the patties on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer for desired doneness. Add a slice of cheddar cheese on top during the last minute of cooking.
  5. While the burgers are cooking, slice the homemade buns in half and toast them lightly on the grill.
  6. Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese, tomato slices, and red onion. Top with the other half of the bun.
