Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (around 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, plus 1 for egg wash
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Flaky sea salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 leaves lettuce
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • Olive oil, for greasing

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Gradually add warm milk and beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Add softened butter and knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
  5. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces, shape into balls, and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another hour.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the risen buns with egg wash and bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown. Let cool.
  7. For the patties, mix ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Form into 4 patties.
  8. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4 minutes on each side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute of cooking.
  9. Assemble the burgers by slicing the cooled brioche buns in half. Layer with lettuce, tomato slices, the cooked patties, and any additional desired toppings.
