Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 ounces spaghetti
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Method

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. Add the meatballs to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes and water. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add the spaghetti to the skillet, ensuring the pasta is submerged in the sauce. Return the meatballs to the skillet.
  6. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the spaghetti is cooked al dente, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
