Classic Homemade Burgers
There's nothing quite like a homemade burger with all the classic fixings. This recipe takes it up a notch by baking your own slow-rise buns, perfect for a summer weekend treat.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 80% lean
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices tomato
- 4 leaves lettuce
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 4 Baked Burger Buns (see recipe)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
Method
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast for the buns. Add warm water and olive oil, and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 2 hours or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Divide the dough into 4 equal parts, shape into balls, and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let rise again for 30 minutes.
- Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
- While the buns are baking, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into four patties.
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium, or until the desired doneness is reached.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a beef patty on each bun bottom. Top with tomato slices, lettuce leaves, and onion. Cover with the top bun.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade burgers.
