Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Method

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef to the pot, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes.
  4. Stir in the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes to toast the spices.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring the chili to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let simmer for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot with your choice of toppings such as diced onions, shredded cheese, or sour cream.
